DOUK-DOUK Pocket Folder

An experience of the rebirth of French Colonial Douk-Douk and Corsican-style folders!  Gaston Cognet and the company created the Douk Douk in the town of Thiers, France in 1927.  Famous in the former French colonies for over 70 years and used recently for decades by the Army and in the French Foreign Legion.  The Cognet family still produces this knife in Thiers, France.

This folding knife is very functional, low-priced and will last a lifetime.  The handle is made of a piece of sheet steel folded into a U shape and encloses a spring which holds the blade open or closed. The knife is assembled with two pins. One forms the blade pivot and the other secures the spring and the steel loop for the lanyard. The strong spring holds the blade securely closed, at 90 degrees, and open. The handle is engraved with the image of a sorcerer called "Douk Douk"- a God of doom in French.  The versatility of this knife make it the perfect addition to any workshop or tool bag.

About the Knife (*extracted from Tactical Life)

World War One and the following Bolshevik revolution in Russia destroyed many of the traditional markets once dominated by the French cutlery company M.C. Cognet-the Founder of Douk Douk Folder.  Not to give up the game without a fight, the firm set about creating a new, inexpensive line of all-steel folders complete with a Melanesian god called “Douk-Douk” stamped on the handle.  Cognet never admited it, but given this was post WWI, the much older folded-steel handle German “Mercator”-type knives might have had some influence on the French design.  Cognet’s great hope was that the Douk-Douk symbol would make the knife popular in France’s Pacific island colonies but, in reality, it was the complete opposite. The islanders wanted nothing to do with a knife stamped with what they considered a symbol of evil.  During the period, not having the religious connotations in the rest of the world that it did in the Pacific, the Douk-Douk knives quickly became local favorites of many third world countries. Algerians in particular were famous for their use of the simple folder.  According to Cognet, these knives were reissued to French troops for field use. Soldiers returning from combat exposed users in France to the knife for the first time, as it had not been marketed to its home country before that.

There are several reasons why the Douk-Douk knives were so popular in the colonies.  The first, obviously, was they were especially created to be inexpensive. There was a time when you could have bought one in the average French colony bazaar for only a few Francs.  Second, Cognet always made a point of stressing the quality of the steel in their blades.  It is said that in many of the colonies, Douk-Douks were the preferred tool for shaving. The thin, flat-ground blades also slice most materials with ease. Third, the folded-steel handle construction makes the knife extremely flat for comfortable carry and/or concealment when that is required, as well as being exceptionally durable under harsh conditions.

About Douk-Douk Legent (*extracted from wiki)
The Douk-Douks (the Melanesian masked avengers) always arrive by sea, at full moon.  The Douk-Douks never speak; they bark like dogs and sing like birds.  Douk-Douks are said to eat human flesh.  If you touch a Douk-Douk, the Douk-Douk hits you with his machete.  Everything the Douk-Douk touches must be burned.  The Douk-Douks are allowed to kidnap any women they want.  If you wanna become a Douk-Douk, you have to be whipped again and again and again..., month after month, year after year (every time the Douk-Douk comes to your village) and never show that you suffer.  "Douk" means: "spirit of the dead".
