From the iron age until the invention of the sissy friction match, flint and steel is how fire was made. The Romans enjoyed gladiatorial battles long after the sun set to the angry light of bonfires spat forth by flint and steel.  After a long day pillaging the coast of Normandy nothing was more relaxing than a drunken evening of bare knuckle boxing and boastful stories with fellow Vikings around a burning thatched roof cottage set aflame with flint and steel.  The pioneers powered through the trek west pulling hand carts across frozen plains and over jagged mountains all the while beset by swarms of locusts the size of lobsters with a smile on their face because they were fueled by whole Bison spit roasted over fires they started with flint and steel.

In a severe survival situation, your ability to create fire, fish and hunt is essential.  Efficiency and knowledge are your key tools when time slips away. Put together your own kit to make primitive survival almost effortless and continue the tradition of seeking understanding from nature through these ancient wisdoms. Millennia before the development of modern matches and lighters, the well-practiced hands of our forebears would have nimbly created a fire, using a traditional ‘Flint & Steel’, in mere seconds. The use of traditional ‘Flint & Steel’ for fire lighting has well and truly stood the test of time; yet it has a simple elegance that is hard to beat.

This is a fully functional prop of historical design, which is produced in traditional manner.  An excellent piece of fire striker for the real bushcraft enthusiasts, offers life of reliable fire lighting and inspire a sense of traditional fulfilment that is associated with the phenomenal ancient fire lighting skill. Hand forged from high-carbon steel hardened.  Designed to be worn as pendants when not in use, and sized to be conveniently stashed in a kit or sit in a handy survival tin.  Forged from high-carbon tool steel and fully hardened, these little strikers will last for years.  This small traditional Pendant Fire Steel is ideal for all of the traditional ‘Flint & Steel’ fire lighting techniques. Although this fire steel is very simple in designs, it does not detract from bountiful supply of sparks that it is able to produce when struck against a piece of flint, sparks created will easily form an ember that can be used to ignite a tinder bundle.

Gives you life of reliable fire lighting and inspire a sense of traditional fulfilment that is associated with this phenomenal ancient fire lighting skill.   An excellent piece for real bushcraft enthusiast.   Light your fire the primitive way!

Measures 48mm X 35mm X 10mm, comes with a leather loop.

Using Tip: The process of starting a fire with flint and steel is straightforward. A spark is created by striking the steel down across the sharp edge of a flint or quartz rock. The rock shears off tiny flakes of metal, creating sparks. To nurture the spark into a flame, the spark is caught on a highly flammable material, e.g. charcloth ('charcoal cloth'). Once the charcloth is glowing, it is transferred to a bundle of tow and blown into flame. The flaming tow is used to ignite successively larger tinder like hemp, wood shavings, dry pine needles and small twigs.

NOTE: Due to the handcrafted nature of the striker, shape may vary one to one slightly
